Percussion at Southeastern University

The percussion studio at SEU is rapidly changing and growing! With new music facilities that opened in Spring 2017, top-quality new instruments being added regularly, and an ever-increasing number of students, it is an exciting time for SEU Percussion. All percussion students receive a well-rounded education in the areas of concert/orchestral percussion, drum set, solo and chamber percussion, and percussion from around the world. Performance opportunities include wind ensemble, orchestra, jazz band, drumline, percussion ensemble, and other chamber ensemble settings. The percussion studio has six marimbas (two 5-octave), three vibraphones, three xylophones, three sets of timpani, seven drum sets, and many cymbals, snare drums, toms, hand drums, and accessory percussion instruments. Most recently, a set of Brazilian samba instruments and a collection of 7 African drums (4 djembes and 3 dununs) have been added to the inventory.

The SEU Percussion Ensemble, comprised of percussion majors as well as non-majors, performs a wide variety of repertoire, ranging from Baroque and Classical-era transcriptions to pop-oriented tunes, to premieres of contemporary percussion works. Students are also encouraged to participate in SEU’s drumline, the Fireline, which performs for numerous Southeastern events throughout the school year, as well as at various community events in and around Lakeland.

In addition to studying the arts of percussion performance and education, percussion students are exposed to important music career and entrepreneurship topics, such as basic recording arts, handling finances, artist endorsements, web presence and social media, and juggling many different jobs as a free-lance musician, all within the context of a Christ-centered learning environment. Thoughts on Education:

Quality education is something I value highly, and it is my goal to provide music and percussion education of the absolute highest level to students of all ages who desire to learn. While there are some areas in which I specialize, I am capable of teaching a broad spectrum of percussion. No matter the instrument or style, I believe in the fundamental value of music to communicate, and I aim to help students understand the incredible breadth and depth of music as art.

However, I also believe in teaching skills that go beyond music––skills that can be used in real life, whether a student pursues a career in music or not. Responsibility, professionalism, respect, patience, and a serious work ethic are all things I emphasize to my students over time. It takes more than simply being a good player to land work in today’s music job market, and it is my goal to equip students to enter the workplace better prepared to take on challenges of all sorts, no matter what field of work.
